the i386 stands for the version optimized for Intel Pentium 3 and AMD
Athlon CPUs, so the i686 for Intel Pentium 4 / Xeon, and AMD Opteron CPUs.
The i386" versions will run on all platforms, whereas the "i686" versions
will only run on SSE2-compatible hardware.
